Four Easy Steps to Interview Success

By: Eric Reinhard

Many people can improve their chances of getting hired if they would take a little time to follow a few simple, but effective steps. Prospective employees, who are looking to get a head start with the company that is hiring, can implement these steps before the job interview. From what you know about the company and being prepared with questions of your own, to dressing appropriately and being presentable, the pre-interview steps can be beneficial to one who is looking to be hired. This article will present 4 simple actions you can and should take to make the best first impression you can.
What kind of impression would you like to make, one where you look confident and informed, or one where you come across as lost and unsure? People who want to be noticed by employers would be wise to know some information about the company they will be interviewing with and if possible some basic knowledge of who will be conducting the interview itself. Having knowledge of what the company does, how long it’s been doing it, and who they cater to, can go a long way in showing that you have interest in the company as well as the position they are hiring for.
How many times have employers given rejections based upon how the interviewee was dressed? Shockingly, the answer is that happens too many times. A good, general rule of how you should be dressed for the interview is to dress as if you already work for them. If the men are in suits and ties and you are a man, you do the same. If the women are wearing suits or conservative dresses and you are a woman, you would also do the same. Overdressing is possible, but it’s far less offensive than if you were underdressed.
Unfortunately, people, whether they think they are or not, are judgmental when it comes to the outward appearances of others. Like the guidelines above about dressing the part, how you present yourself can be one of the most important factors to consider. Have you ever been to a doctor that had a stud in his eyebrow? Most likely you have not. A neat appearance can go a long way toward making others around you more comfortable. One thing to do would be to have your hair cut to a reasonable length or styled to be not distracting, your clothing should be clean and pressed, visible tattoos should be covered if possible, and visible piercing with jewelry should be limited or in some cases, completely removed prior to the interview.
Having a successful interview can be attributed to following the guide above. These are just some of the rules to adhere to before you go for the actual interview. That old phrase about making a first impression is very true and these 4 steps will be very helpful to you in making a good one. Once you have done these 4 steps, you will be in far better standing in the eyes of the employer and the interview will go much better than if you had not done a little work ahead of time.
