Home | Goal Setting
Today, we're going to talk about a simple strategy I like to call "attack from the back." Sometimes it seems daunting to look at the desired end result and we feel overwhelmed with the task we've set. The goal looks very big, like a lot of work. A great way to overcome this is to break your goal down into smaller pieces, a little reverse engineering, or as I like to call it the 'attack from the back' approach. If your goal is to save $1000 dollars for example. That may seem, and may even be, a lot for some people. But if you look at that goal, and your time limit (remember from Step #1?) then you need only to break that down. Let's say you want to save that money in 3 months for example. 3 months is about 90 days. Some simple math will make this task seem so easy, and make it so much easier to accomplish. $1000 divided by 90 days = $11.11 a day. Hmmm. Doesn't seem so bad when you look at it that way. Set your goal then to save $12 a day for the next 90 days. You'll have $80 to spare! Okay, I hear some of you saying, $12 a day is a lot to me. If it really is too much, then you may need to rethink your time period. If it's set, you 'must' have it. Then, what can I do to save $12 a day. Look at whatever money you are spending on a daily basis. Don't fool yourself with statements like 'the electric bill is monthly.' If your electric bill can be reduced, it's one way to 'save' that money. If you're buying coffee from the vending machines at school or work, how much do you spend? You might have to 'save' that money in several places, a little here, a little there, but if you really have developed your "Why" statements and a "must" attitude, you will find somewhere you can save. If your goal is to lose weight, how much? By when? Break that down into a daily or weekly goal. The great part about this strategy is that you can't put off working on your goal until right up to the ending date and fall back on our favorite excuse of "well, I just didn't have enough time." You'll be able to determine early on if your goal is reasonable and attainable or if you need to make some adjustments in your goal, time-table, or approach.
