Goal Setting Tip #4: Tell someone else.

By: Bill Ritzer

Now you know that you need specific goals, a set deadline and how to break down your goals into more manageable chunks.

Today we're ready to take the next step.

Once you've developed your goals, and a plan to achieve them, you need to tell someone else about them.

Peer pressure is one of the greatest motivating forces in society.

Think about all of the things you have done, or wouldn't do because you were worried about what other people might think, say, or do.

How many bad haircuts, crazy fashion statements, or bad movies have been supported by nothing more than peer pressure?

I've had more than my share, I can tell you that, along with a lot of other things I'm too embarrassed to mention.

I was told by a clergyman once that he though %50 of marriages would have never come off if the parties involved hadn't been more worried about what others would think of them if they didn't follow through once they got to the wedding day. Maybe some of them should have followed their hunch on that one :-)

The point is that people, you and me, too, will do even some drastic things due to peer pressure.

We all want other people to like and respect us. It's a fact and a core part of human nature.

I'm sure you can think of some things in your life where you might have acted differently had it not been for that same feeling.

Now we just need to use that for something good.

Like re-enforcing our determination to reach our goals.

Tell someone you know, and trust, your goal. You might even ask them to check up on you along the way. Or tell them the date, and that you are going to call or meet them to let them know that you did what you said you would do, when you said you would do it.

It's a great motivator, knowing that someone else is expecting you to meet that goal, too. Of course, it's difficult though to push yourself too hard for someone
else. You still need to have those "Why" statements and the benefits and rewards of reaching your goal firmly implanted in your mind.

You might want to review those items on a regular basis.

So, now you need to get about finding someone, supportive, to share your goals with who will help to motivate you to succeed.
