Heroes Actor to Marry Longtime Partner

To Star Trek aficionados like me, the name George Takei will always be synonymous to Mr. Sulu in the original Gene Roddenberry series. To the younger generation, he is most likely best known as Kaito Nakamura, the tragically heroic father of Masi Oka’s popular Heroes character, Hiro Nakamura.

For most of us, his recent engagement is probably still quite a shock because the soon-to-be better half is also male.

Yes, although it hasn’t been a secret for many years, it is often still difficult to wrap my head around that fact that Captain Kirk’s trusty pilot is in fact, gay. Nevertheless, Takei and his longtime partner, Brad Altman, will soon take full advantage of the recent announcement that California now allows same-sex marriages.

“Our California dream is reality,” the Heroes actor wrote on his website. “Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!”

Altman and Takei have been waiting for such a revolution of sorts to take place, having been a couple for 21 long years. Fortunately for them, California recently became only the second U.S. state to permit the union of member of the same sex. The ruling, which officially enables same-sex couples to obtain licenses to wed in California , is scheduled to take effect June 16.

“Brad and I have shared our lives together for over 21 years,” Takei said. “We've worked in partnership; he manages the business side of my career and I do the performing. We've shared the good times as well as struggled through the bad…He is my love and I can't imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily.”
