Obesity is a world-wide problem. China, Japan and even Korea, who have never before had to worry about obesity, are now seeing the numbers on the scales rise higher and higher. An increasing waistline is a problem virtually everyone shares. As far as our species, what is causing us to be so fat? Poor nutrition can be the only answer. Based on the old adage "we are what we eat" it should be clear that our health and nutrition is severely compromised. It is easy to see why obesity is on the rise when fast food restaurants are in almost every town, portion sizes continue to increase in size, and foods contain fat, sugar, and preservatives. An answer does exist, though it can only be found by learning about proper nutrition. Food As Fuel Today we keep our focus on food and it's taste, as well as the quantity of it we eat, and we often overlook the basic fact that food is just our fuel. Our body turns the food we eat into energy, in order to keep us moving each day. When there is a surplus of fuel, the body stores it as fat. When we gain weight, it is not our body getting revenge, it's just the way our body is designed to work. Aside from preventing starvation, fat basically provides heat to our body and insulation to our bones, internal organs and even to our muscles. Eating exorbitantly without following a daily exercise regime, causes our body to turn excess calories in to fat. With so much food we consume nowadays, our fat is increasing at a quickening pace. Balance Is The Core Excellent nutrition cannot be attained without balance. You'll not have to deny yourself the foods, treats, and even desserts you love. To avoid getting overweight you will need to balance these carefully. It is important that your diet contain enough fruits, vegetables, lean meats and nutrition supplements. You can reward yourself to a treat or desert, for sticking to your nutrition plan during the entire week. Assuming that you exercise enough to burn off the excess calories, you can maintain a desirable weight just by making sure that you have at least one week of healthy eating between one or two days of "splurging". If You Weigh Too Much If you currently weigh too much and desire to shed those excess pounds, good nutrition paired with exercise is the only means to achieve it. For those who already eat a balanced diet, try eating smaller meals more often. (for instance, eating six times every day) and regular intervals of exercise, thirty minutes long and three to five times a week, can help to ensure that the weight will come off. Weight loss has no quick fix. You have to work at it. But you don't have to do it like on the infomercials, where they're all sweating and panting to death. If your nutrition is balanced, you can burn enough calories to lose weight with just a few walks around the block each day.
