Instruction in Effective Communication

By: Dave Griffiths

"The benefit of writing is to create a context in which others can think." E. Schlossberg, Author, Educator

"According to some studies, an individual's Number One fear is public speaking. The second is dying. Does that sound accurate? That means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Novelist

If you are writing and speaking in public, powerful communication starts and ends with the what -- the content. The how will come much easier. Once writing training and presentation skills training help you in gaining confidence (and you will have confidence because you'll be a trained pro) you'll have no problems writing or speaking in public.

To get there, aided by writing training, remember the three pillars of effective business communication, whether written or spoken:

Writing exercises the mind. Compared to an unplanned conversation, writing -- whether a presentation to a client or a report for the boss or a sales proposal -- presents you the opportunity to show how smart you are.

Know your audience and your readers. How much do they know already? Are they novices? Do they want to be entertained or trained or persuaded? What do you want them to get from your speech?

Edit and rewrite and, in the case of public speaking, practice. If you don't check your work carefully before sending it, or rehearse the style and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking sloppy and unprofessional. It's called QC (quality control), and without it effective communication is nearly impossible.
