Introduction to Nine Hypnotic Tales

By: James Malone

Let me tell you a story that takes place in the late 1980s and involves yours truly. At the time I had been out of college a couple of years and had a job as a caseworker for a community mental health agency, a typical path for someone like myself with an undergraduate degree in psychology.

Those of you familiar with social service work would know that it really has a Jekyll and Hyde quality about it. On the plus side you get to help people whom normal society often shuns, and what could be more rewarding? And quite often these folks, while having to cope with the consequences of mental illness and addiction, are also often rather interesting characters. Truly no two working days were ever the same.

The primary downside is that the pay is low and the chances for advancement are pretty limited, which often led to staff members burning out and leaving the field altogether. Indeed at the time I remember biting on my lip one night when an acquaintance was whining endlessly about the low starting pay of the sanitation worker job he had job started- which was about 5 grand more a year than I was making and with a better benefits package to boot! And while I have total respect for the valuable work that these men do, cmon the entry requirements were not exactly rigorous.

So I was like a lot of 20 somethings with their first grownup job. What is I was doing was OK for that moment, but not the rest of my working life. Some direction was needed, but where to turn? As I was discussing this situation with a coworker, she said Jim, you seem like a fairly bright guy, there has to be something out there for you. Have you considered career testing? Well I hadnt up to that point and it seemed like serendipity when a flier from the local community college arrived in the mail that day describing an upcoming career testing seminar. Note that it seemed like serendipity.

It promised that after completing a comprehensive computer scored personality inventory, we the participants would have our ideal careers identified and be given concrete suggestions for pursuing them. Yippee, problem solved-just sign up, take the darn test and truck on down the highway to success!

It was a wintry Saturday morning when about 30 of us from a wide range of ages and types trudged into a meeting room at the county college and received an orientation about the test. It was one of those deals where you fill in the dots with a number two pencil.

Like some of the psychological tests I had seen administered before, it seemed like it took forever to complete and they kept asking the same questions over and over again in a slightly different form, probably to overcome the tendency most of us have to answer questions as we believe we should, not as to how we really think and feel. As I recall the questions were mostly about interests, personal preferences as to social interaction and the like. I just dug in and gave it my best.

The next weekend we met again to discuss the results-the envelope please! So with a pleasant sense of anticipation I opened my personalized report. What career was your humble narrator best suited for? What profession could allow me to fully develop and express my unique talents and would, as the title of a book popular at the time, enable me to do what you love and the money will follow?

O.K., so how curiuos are you about what I was "supposed" be? Order
