Setting and Achieving goals isn't really about the things, or the "what" you are focusing on. Last time we talked a little about being specific, writing down your goals, and The key to setting a proper goal is to decide first what you want, but then to focus on "why" you want that. Take some time and think about why you want to lose weight, make more money, or live a better life. If you really, really want to attain your goals, you'll need to spend some time on this exercise, and write it down :-) Why do you want to lose 10 pounds? To feel better? Be healthier? Have more energy? Be able to play more with your children? Enjoy your favorite sport? Wear that swim suit without wearing yourself out holding in your tummy? We have only two basic reasons for doing anything. (Doing nothing is also 'something.') We want to gain pleasure or avoid pain. It's that simple, really. When you make the 'pleasure' of attaining your goal greater than the 'pain' of sticking to it, you will easily reach it. That's why it's so important to focus on the "why" of our goals and not the "what." If your 'why' is strong enough, then the 'what' will come. Period. If the 'what' is all you have, it will be an endless, mostly fruitless struggle. Do you want more money so you can play with it? Look at it? Brag about it? I hope not. We want more money for what money will allow us to do, or sometimes not have to do. Providing for your family, over- providing. Giving to your favorite charities with an abundance mind-set. Not being stressed about whether your lights are going to be turned off next week because you couldn't pay the electricity bill. Vacationing where you want. That's what more money means to you. That's the part you should focus your energy on if you want to be successful. Make these images of yourself and the rewards that achieving your goals will bring as clear as possible. Daydream a little. Be that person, the thinner, wealthier, happier person in your mind. Focus on that, and not the goal itself. So many people lose themselves, their lives, by focusing all of their energies on the 'what' parts of life. I want this, or that, or whatever will only waste your life. I want this because it will make me feel younger, better, stronger, more attractive, kinds of statements will empower you and you will set and achieve those goals with ease. So, remember, it's not "what you want" but "why you want it" that really matters and will help you to stay focused and reach your goals. Develop the 'why' until it reaches a 'must' level and you will topple mountains. The "I must do this" mindset will carry you along much better, and faster, than any "I want this" attitude ever will.
