Positive Coaching

By: David Barron

As a hypnotist for Positive Changes I also get to act as a coach. As a coach I find the interactive nature of the coaching session completely different from hypnosis.

Quite often I find that the client is doing great and following the program to the letter. Often they report how much easier things are than it was.

This leaves me with a problem; I have 15 to 30 minutes of time to fill the coaching session with someone doing so well there's almost nothing to coach!

The solution came from my studies of influence and persuasion that I call “positive coaching”. Positive coaching is a question based process that focuses on the positive aspects of the clients' success.

Quite simply when the client reports a positive response to the program (no food craving, greater sense of control, better self image) questions are asked that have the client focus on that success.

“That was pretty easy wasn't it?” is one question. Yes, it's a very leading question and presupposes that it's easy but what benefit could anyone have in thinking that it's hard?

Here are some other questions used in the positive coaching process:

“When you noticed (the positive response) what thoughts or feeling do you have?” This question will tend to bring about more positive and deeper feeling about the process and link the beneficial change to even more positive feelings.

“How did you first notice (the positive response)?” Often you will get a story that details their new realizations. This question further presupposes that they can continue to notice the response.

“What does it feel like, now, knowing you have this control, and on into the future?” This is a slick question on so many levels because it presupposes they have control and that they know about. It also presupposes that they have it now and in the future.

"Can you see how easily you'll continue to practice this (positive response) regardless of what is happening in your life?" again a leading question but it does force the client to see it exactly how the questions suggests; easily and regardless of what is happening in life.

"Where do you already see this response being of use?" This question focuses on the areas they can apply this response.

The beauty of positive coaching is not so much in the questions but in the fact that the client must respond to them in their own words. On an unconscious level this validates and amplifies all the positive aspects that they feel and makes it easier for them to live up to what they are saying.

It is also a very good way of pointing out and illuminating the positive results of the program that some people easily overlook. Let's remember that many people see change as an all-or-nothing process and expect to be transformed in one session. Positive coaching teaches them that they can notice gradients of improvement.

Positive coaching also makes the time fly by with the coach not having to do much of the talking and allows the client to leave feeling better than when they began.
