When your car is not working right, one part or another isn't working as well as it should. One problem may lead to another until you car stops running. Now, unless you're a mechanic, you'll probably hire one to fix the problem because they're professionals. Most marriage and family counselors can be compared to mechanics in that they deal with fixing certain problems with your marriage. Instead of repairing some electrical problem or engine part, they will try to fix emotional or relational issues. There are legitimate issues to handle. Obviously, you don't want an amateur working on your car or your marriage. You want someone professional there to restore a wholeness and healthiness to your family. Generally, the best one for the task is a certified marriage or family therapist. The job of marriage and family counselors may be fulfilled by psychologists, psychotherapists, and marriage therapists, depending upon level of expertise or specialized training. Basically, they are available to offer advice on relationships that may be used in a number of ways so broader family therapy can be properly applied. It is common practice for these relationship counselors to focus not only on you, but your spouse, your children, extended family members, as well as friends. The belief is that by involving relevant people the chance to work together to reach the goal of healthier and stronger marriage will work. It is absolutely critical to have the licensed professional in contact with everyone to help bring about the desired effects. The most important part is that you and your spouse are receptive to the counseling methods. Marriage and family counselors can only be successful in the repair of your relationship if you are ready to use them. Most therapeautic techniques are hindered if the couple isn't ready to cooperate. The marriage counselor is faced with the task of trying to breakdown emotional blocks that are keeping you or your spouse from allowing the therapy go forward. Most therapists and counselors work to build up families and fortify them. It could be a personal decision that led you to become a counselor because you would like families to be healthier and happier. Most counselors are hoping to see their patients together ten years later, in stronger relationships and with their old problems in the past. The sad part is that such hopes are not always realized. There just some difficulties that cannot be resolved by marriage and family counselors. At the same time, this is really the exception not the rule. Most marriages are fixable if both spouses are ready to make it work. You should have realized by now that marriage does not always follow a rosy path. Sometimes, a source of outside help, even professional help from family counseling services, may be needed to reinforce the foundation in your relationships.
Examining whether marriage and family counselors are a good option has been a facinating experience. The topic has also provided a wealth of material for my writing.
