The Power of the Red Herring

By: JK Ellis

A Red Herring is term used in negotiation and is something that one side will use to distract the other side from the real issue.

For example person knows that the money needed to buy a house won't be available to him for some time so he throws out a red herring saying that he knows the house doesn't meet a building code and demands proof that it does. This provides the needed time to get the money together and keeps the seller from giving it to another buyer.

Red Herrings are also great tools in persuasion, seduction and cult building. A cult leader wants his followers to focus on a) an enemy or b) enlightenment so they won't be looking at more mundane things like where the money is going.

It's also used extensively in spiritual literature. Alester Crowley, Alice Bailey and even hypnotist Orman McGill would write whole books that were nothing more than red herrings written to hide more subtle and meaningful message.

Yes, in case you're wondering I've used red herrings as well. The red herring I use is namely "Control", "Sex", "Power" and "Build a Cult-like Following". However the real message is hopefully not so obvious.

Can anyone guess what it is?
