Developing a good apprehension of the Yin Yang is crucial to learning Chinese Metaphysics. Just as important are the Five Elements and Bagua. Olden Chinese believe that in the beginning there was a state of nothingness or void. They named it Wu Ji and chose the circle to represent it. Rising from this state of nothingness are two energies that are equal yet opposing. They are called Yin (submissive) and Yang (active) and they interact continuously, with neither one overcoming the other. The Tai Qi is round to indicate that the interaction of Yin and Yang is continuous and does not end. Yin and Yang is next shown as two fish shaped object - thinner at the tail and wider at the head - to imply that when Yang grows, Yin contracts and vice versa. Finally the white speck within the black fish intimate that Yin emerge when Yang is at its highest and vice versa. In addition, the Yin and yang is always shown in close proximity and of equal size. This imply that both are of equal standing and that one is not stronger or plays a greater role than the other. Everything can be labeled as either Yin or Yang. Active traits such as day, summer, sun, motion, white, angular and shinny are considered Yang. Passive traits such as night, winter, moon, stillness, black, smooth and dull are considered Yin. From now to the end of this article, I will illustrate how the concept of the Yin Yang is applied to seasons, plants, objects, human beings, the Five Elements etc. Yin Yang can be applied to seasons. Winter is Yin while Summer is Yang. Spring become rising Yang while Autumn is growing Yin. What about objects? How do you classify them? Since Yang is active, large objects and those that are angular in shape, have a shinny surface or warm to the touch is Yang. Yin objects, on the hand, is small, smooth, have a dull surface or cold to the touch. The principle of Yin and Yang can be further applied to plants. For example live plant is Yang while dead wood is Yin. Digging in further, large tree is Yang while small plant is Yin. And rounded leaves are Yin while narrow leaves are Yang. In human beings, the left side of the brain is linked to logical thinking while the right side with creativity. Boastful, loud, aggressive and impulsive characteristic are classified as Yang while shy, quiet, soft-spoken and patient characteristic are categorized as Yin. Both the external parts of the body and the internal organs can be classified into Yin and Yang. The front and lower part of the body - below the waist - is Yin while the back and upper part of the body is Yang. The small and large intestine, the stomach, the bladder and gall bladder are Yin. In a house, places that should be quiet, need lesser lighting and for concentration or resting are Yin. This include the bedroom, study and storeroom. The others light the living, kitchen, dining and family area are classified as Yang. Does the Five Elements have Yin and Yang characteristics? Yes, they do. Water that moves a lot like a swift flowing river or water fountain is Yang. Water that is still or relatively slow like a lake is Yin. River - Yin or Yang? If you go back to basis principles water is Yang (moving) while mountain is Yin (still). However in some parts of the river, water flows slowly e.g. pond or meandering courses and is considered Yin. In some other parts water flows quickly e.g. straight steep courses and it considered Yang.
