Understanding Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a name given to a condition that involves chronic inflammation of the muscles and the connective tissues that protect the joints. It affects mostly women and it consists of the most puzzling symptoms and a number of causes. Traditional medicine has very little to offer in the way of relief other than antidepressants and anti-inflammatory drugs, but one can turn to natural therapies which have proved to be helpful.
The pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia have no known causes although many theories have been put forward in this regard. The only difference is that in CFS the main symptom is fatigue, while in fibromyalgia it is pain. But the aching and burning nature of the pain can strike any part of the body. The pain and stiffness is found to be worse in the morning, accompanied by insomnia, headaches, depression, digestive disorders, dizziness and sometimes skin rashes. These symptoms can get worse due to presence of allergies, over exertion, lack of sleep or infections.
Diet has a significant part to play in Fibromyalgia. One should mostly take low-fat diets, and avoid saturated fats, butter, cream and other animal fats. These types of fats interfere with circulation and get converted into prostaglandins, which again trigger an inflammatory response. Coconut oil can be used without any harm due to its high levels of medium chain fatty acid which is readily absorbed by the body and helps in raising energy levels. Due to the belief that grains, legumes and vegetables are a better option than animal foods, there are many people who include a whole lot of carbohydrates in their diet. But this is not true and hence should be restricted. Besides all these precautions, persons affected with fibromyalgia need to pay attention to their digestive health. Bowel cleansing is important if one is prone to constipation. The free form amino acids I-glutamine is an excellent source for rebuilding of the intestine wall if there is a problem here. Digestive enzymes, if taken seriously will benefit and help in proper absorption of nutrients.

Another factor which is mostly overlooked is the emotional element in the development of fibromyalgia. More often than not past emotional traumas are known to lead to this condition.
Fibromyalgia is a complicated and challenging ailment that cannot be handled with a single method or treatment, but rather a combination of approaches would be a better solution.
