Willpower vs. Imagination

By: Associate Editor

Willpower vs. Imagination

In a knock-down, drag-out, no-holds-barred, until-the-last-one-is-standing matchup, which one wins?

Willpower is believed to be the backbone of every great achievement. That indefinable something, drive, determination, and pure strength of mind.

Without it, you are left wafting in the wind, prone to every breeze that blows, a victim to any and every whim . . .

But where does that 'whim' come from?

Just popped out of thin air?

Usually the source is, yes, your imagination.

We've talked before about focusing on the end result instead of the process.

In a way, this is an extension of that discussion. When you focus on the end result, you are using your imagination to create pictures of the result you are striving for, and when your focus remains there, you will achieve that result.

What makes a donut look delicious?

Really, it's just a round ring of fried dough, maybe some dark chocolate melted over it. You may even be able to smell it, and that smell is appealling, I'll admit it.

But what makes you want, truly 'want' that donut? Lack of willpower, some, many, might say. But it's really your imagination, telling you, showing you in that theater of the mind, what it will taste like, feel like in your mouth, or what that feeling, that endorphine rush, that will come over you, soothing your body, giving your mind a boost, is going to be like.

Imagination is the winner. Oh, it might lose out in match play occassionally, but in any "Best of ..." series, imagination wins.

So, we need to be aware, and just turn it to our favor.

Now that you're salivating, I was too for that matter, for a chocolate donut, let's re-play that movie.

Instead of letting your mind romp off to the dark side of what that donut will taste like, grab it (your imagination, that is, not the donut) and turn it towards the outcome, the outcome you desire.

It does help sometimes to look at the negative aspects, the "oh, I'll regret this" and "it's going to make me fatter" kinds of things, but I would rather focus on the positives.

That is, not eating it will put you further along the path to that ideal weight, figure, or clothing size that you've set as your goal, and how good, how absolutely wonderful it will be, to be that size, that weight, to feel so good, to feel so good about yourself, to have others coming up to you and saying, "Wow, you look great! Did you get a new haircut? What's up with you? You are really looking chipper these days." And the things you will feel, and say to yourself, when you reach that goal, when you look in the mirror and see, you, that you, the one you have been striving to show to others, and how good that will feel.

That will make imagination, and you, the winner.
