Writing Training

By: Dave Griffiths

"The skill of writing is to build a thought-provoking environment in which individuals can think." Edwin Schlossberg, Author

"According to some surveys, people's biggest fear is public speaking. The Number Two is death. Does that sound right? That means to the average person, if you attend a funeral, you're better off expired than giving the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Novelist

When you are writing or speaking in public, effective communication begins and ends with the what -- the content. The how will come easier. As writing training and presentation skills training assist you in gaining success (and you will have confidence because you'll be a trained pro) you'll have no problems writing or speaking in public.

To get there, aided by writing skills training, keep in mind the three pillars of effective communication, whether written or spoken:

Writing exercises the mind. Compared to a spontaneous conversation, writing -- whether a presentation at a meeting or a report for the shareholders or a sales proposal -- presents you the opportunity to show how smart you are.

Understand your audience and your readers. How much do they know already? Are they specialists? Do they want to be amused or trained or persuaded? What do you want them to take away from your speech?

Plan and rewrite and, in the case of public speaking, practice. If you don't check your work carefully before hitting the "send" button, or rehearse the details and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking sloppy and unprofessional. It's called quality control, without which effective communication is almost impossible.
