    Backstage at the 'So You Think You Can Dance' tour, the massage therapist and I were quickly ushered to our makeshift treatment room. We were told several dancers would be arriving for care immediately, while the others would be seeing us after the pre-show rehearsal.
    Tacoma was stop number one on the tour, and many of the dancers were already dealing with a blend of new and old aches and pains. They would be travelling by bus to 41 cities in 61 days to perform their several-hour routine. Their gruelling schedule had no room for injury, and it became our job to help speed the healing process and hold everyone together.
    I was shocked to learn that some of the dancers had never received any therapeutic bodywork. Some of them suffered from chronic neck pain (dancer's whiplash). Others were dealing with un-rehabilitated ankle sprains from years earlier - or back pain brought on by the rigors of travelling. And these were just a few problems we treated and that we see happen in every sport.
    Most people assume that high-calibre athletes are in tune with their bodies. However, having good body control does not mean that they are injury-free. Many athletes do not realize how much their bodies compensate for injuries over time.
    Years of damage accumulates because of the typical "walk-it-off" and "no-pain, no-gain" attitudes instilled in them as young athletes. They rarely learn that every neglected injury changes how their body moves.
    It work like this: Anytime you pull a muscle, sprain a ligament or pinch a nerve, you damage nerves that sense pressure and movement - or that sense and help coordinate your balance and movement.
    When you damage these balance and pressure nerves, they relay bad messages to your brain. Your brain then sends bad information back down to your muscles and joints and makes them act less coordinated. Less coordination means your muscles and joints start working in a different order and causing more areas of stress and strain in your body. The more stress that is focused in an area, the more abnormal movement happens and the more likely you are to eventually develop arthritis in that area.
    For example, damage to the balance nerves in your ankles is what often leads to the spraining of a particular ankle over and over again. If your ankle is not retrained with rehabilitation exercises and ligament massage, the balance is off. Every time you put pressure down on that unbalanced ankle with an abnormal angle, you roll it again. Eventually the muscles connecting your ankle and knee work differently. A chain reaction begins and your knee, hip and/or low back become affected.
    Any of those joints along the chain reaction may develop arthritis. One bad ankle sprain without treatment could end a sports career or lead to a lifetime of problems.
    Chronic neck tightness and soreness from whiplash-like falls and manoeuvres is another common untreated injury. Ignoring neck pains can lead to migraines and possibly severe arthritis and loss of neck range of motion.
    Repeated neck injuries also damage the many balance nerves located in the upper neck joints. Chronic injury to those nerves can lead to vertigo-like symptoms and poor balance.
    Chiropractic adjustments, massage and physical therapy exercises retrain the muscles, joints and nerves to work correctly again. Each therapy has its own benefit and research shows that they work even better when combined.
    Working with the dance tour made it obvious that many athletes do not know how important it is to understand and take care of their bodies.
    It is important, whether you plan on playing your sport professionally or just on the weekends for fun, that you get proper care for your injuries. Do not just "walk it off" and forget about it. Take the time to fix your injuries properly the first time so you can keep your competitive edge and not worry about creating permanent problems.

    5) Intensity of Weight Training

    6) Frequency of Workouts

    The factors affecting recovery from workouts that I've listed above are still only a few... The list goes on and on. Your entire life and what you do each and every day affects your recovery from workouts and your muscle building and fat burning results. No one will ever be able to tell you that you're overtraining. It's something you're going to have to watch out for yourself.

    If I told you that you could workout 7 days per week without overtraining, would you still call me crazy? Because you can do exactly that and not overtrain. You would definitely need to know what you were doing, but you could pull it off and make good progress. I don't recommend 7 days per week as I am just trying to make a point.

    Do you know what point I'm trying to make here? When someone tells you that you're overtraining, did they even care to ask you how much water you've been drinking, what supplements your taking, are you training to failure every set, are you doing high intensity cardio, are your stress levels high, etc? No. Most will never ask you that because they have no idea what overtraining is or how it comes about.

    This is How You Know if You're Overtraining...

    All you need to do is monitor your strength gains. If you are making strength gains each workout, you are not overtraining. If you are having trouble making strength gains, this also does not mean you are overtraining.

    As long as you are making progress, you don't have to worry about overtraining.

    If progress slows or comes to a halt, the simple way of fixing that is to first ensure you're optimizing all the factors that affect recovery between workouts. Are you sleeping enough? Drinking enough water? Do you need to decrease the stress in your life? Simple changes can kickstart your progress again!

    If you're staying sore for extended periods of time... let's say for more than 4 to 5 days in the same muscle group, you most likely need to take a break from weight training. This shouldn't happen unless you're doing way too much weight lifting and too high a frequency. Soreness is not the best indicator of recovery, but if it occurs for long periods of time, you've done too much damage and need an extended break to let your body recover. Simply take a week off.

    "You won't get bored or even have much time to think. I try to pick people up in a tornado of energy so they don't have a second to think or doubt themselves. Before you know it, the workout is over, and you feel good," Michaels says.

    When it comes to food, keep it basic. Micheals says to use "common sense" and eat clean, whole foods. "Eat lean, organic proteins, whole grains and fresh veggies and fruit. Steer clear of processed foods, and reduce your alcohol intake," Michaels says.

    Staying motivated is key to keeping yourself on your fitness track. "It's about creating an environment of energy for yourself," Michaels says.

    Michaels also suggests envisioning exactly what you plan to look like when you reach your fitness goals. "Keep a picture in mind of what you're working out for," Michaels says. "Sometimes working out isn't pleasurable, so think about the rewards. See yourself in that dress, with your hair how you want it with all the details."

The effort required to reduce large masses of plant matter into oils made these liquids extremely special commodities in early civilizations. Nowhere in literature is this more apparent than in the Bible. In both the Old and New Testaments, essential oils were prized as symbols of wealth, healing, generosity and faith. From the use of cedarwood and hyssop for physical healing in the book of Leviticus, to Mary of Bethany anointing of Jesus's feet with her life savings of spikenard in the book of John, essential oils played, and continue to play, an important role in the spiritual lives of Jews and Christians.

    The distillation process for essential oils is a relatively new phenomenon that requires a still and a large amount of water to steam out the essential oils. Most likely, the oils we read about in the Bible were infusions of plant material into other more common oils. This, however, does not reduce their potency or their cultural and historical significance. Frankincense, myrrh and the other oils of the Bible were held in high esteem and difficult to obtain. Regardless of their distillation process, creating an aromatic oil has always been a labor-intensive project.

    We find about twelve essential oil plants listed in the Bible: juniper, myrtle, spikenard, frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, cinnamon, cedar, cedar and sandalwood, hyssop and cypress. One part of the puzzle that is unclear to modern scholars is whether all these plants were used as essential oils or if they were herbal plant remedies. Regardless, the Bible certainly makes reference to the Jews and Christians using these plants for anointing and also for medicine. There are varying interpretations of how many healing plants mentioned in the Bible were used for medicinal or sacred purposes. However, contemporary aromatherapy still recognizes these oils as important ingredients in the essential oil repertoire, and it is clear humankind has valued these plants for thousands of years.

    The aromatic plants of the Bible reflect the dryness of the Middle East. These plants can survive harsh climates and little rainfall. Fortunately for humankind, this unforgiving environment has given birth to many of aromatherapy's most well-loved plants. The oils of the Bible come from a variety of plants, most of which are hardy, desert-dwellers. Cinnamon is a bark from an aromatic tree that curls once it is removed and dried. Sandalwood, cedar, cypress and juniper are also all trees or shrubs found in the Mediterranean region. Historically, they were used for wood as well as medicine, aromatherapy and incense. Frankincense, myrrh and galbanum are resins derived from the barks of trees. They are often burned directly, also used in incense and retain their aromatic qualities for a long period of time. Modern aromatherapy often uses frankincense and myrrh for their abilities to connect us to higher planes of awareness. The frequently mentioned hyssop is an aromatic plant with purple flowers that is widely cultivated for use in cooking and herbal medicine. Myrtle, a flowering short tree or shrub, is a common aromatherapy plant as well that grows wild in these dry climates. Finally, spikenard, also called nard in the Bible, is a plant that is native to the Himalayan region of Asia. It was imported to the Middle East and used as an expensive perfume.

    The Old Testament contains the most references to healing plants. One of the first of these plants to be mentioned in the Bible is cinnamon. In Exodus 30:23-29, God instructs Moses to create an anointing oil made from myrrh, cinnamon, cassia, cane and olive oil. He advises Moses to place the oil on all the implements used for worship in the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, the portable alter created for worship during the Israelites' 40-year journey in the desert. Through being anointed, the objects became transmuted into sacred vessels. The act of anointing objects and people with precious oils is carried throughout the Old Testament and can be found in the New Testament as well.

    Jesus's life history has a number of instances when essential oils were conferred on him as acts of faith and appreciation. The book of Matthew tells of the kings from the East that came to offer Jesus gifts at his birth, notably frankincense and myrrh. As we already learned, these two resins are often used in modern times to assist in spiritual work. Jesus also received gifts of spikenard from two women. The first woman cracked a jar of spikenard and poured it above Jesus's head. The second gift-giver, Mary Magdalene, used her life savings of the same plant oil to anoint his feet. Using her hair, she then massaged the oil into his skin. These acts of faith and gratitude were seen as humble sacrifices as spikenard was a particularly expensive oil to obtain.

    Biblical oils are now common features of the modern aromatherapy bouquet, helping us to heal, meditate and offer gifts in worship. Some of the oils, like myrrh and frankincense, have been used together for centuries. Our love and respect for these oils owe much to the early Jews and Christians, and Biblical references to these powerful plants continue to intrigue modern audiences. Aroma medicine as we know it today is a somewhat modern aspect of natural healing, yet the substances employed are as old as humankind. If we take the time to learn how these oils were used in centuries past, an illuminating connection can be made between plant medicine, human civilization and religious practice.
